SPIRIT (Synergies to Protect Places of Worship and Religious Gatherings) is a project aiming to strengthen the protection of religious sites and gatherings across Europe through practical, collaborative security strategies.

SPIRIT addresses safety in highly symbolic and vulnerable urban locations. By involving religious communities, law enforcement, urban planners and security professionals, the project promotes a unified and sustainable approach to safeguarding places of worship.

Main goals of the project include:

  • Improve threat and vulnerability assessment methodologies for religious sites.
  • Provide advanced training for first responders and security stakeholders.
  • Promote long-term safety integration into urban planning frameworks.

Desired outcome involves a harmonised framework and toolset to help protect places of worship across Europe, including a practical mobile application offering real-time security advice and improved incident preparedness.
