What if we could design cities that feel safe without looking like fortresses? The SAFE-CITIES free course: Security by Design, shows how to integrate safety into urban spaces, without sacrificing openness, inclusivity or aesthetics.
The SAFE-CITIES project is all about making public spaces safer by weaving protective measures directly into the way cities are planned and designed, without compromising their openness or accessibility. As part of this initiative, a free e-learning course has been developed to bring these ideas to those who shape the future of European cities: urban planners, architects, city officials, and policymakers.
The course covers:
The training is organised into two comprehensive modules:
Explore the conceptual roots of security by design, including principles like design-for-all, adaptive planning, and climate-resilient solutions. Understand how these ideas align with key EU strategies on safety, accessibility and liveability.
Dive into the Atlas 4 Public Spaces – a practical planning tool inspired by the New European Bauhaus Compass. It offers a matrix-based approach across three dimensions: methodology, user engagement, and physical interventions. You’ll get recommendations for public space design based on the data you input.
Enjoy the flexibility of e-learning: study when it suits you, at your own pace, and on your own terms. The course is completely free, bringing together academic expertise and practical insight.
Take this opportunity to explore how thoughtful urban design can make our cities safer and more inclusive.
